Talk in French by Paul Smith - on Zoom
In the hierarchy of 19th century artistic genres, history was ranked at the summit. Moreover, all of the most significant events in French history were immortalised on canvas by Vernet, Delacroix, and Gérard, to name but a few. Equally, each event was also tethered to the place it occurred, especially in Paris, an urban ‘stage’ par excellence, perhaps without equal anywhere else in the world. This evening, Paul Smith will take you on a brief guided of French history against the backdrop of the city of Paris and introduce you to the lay of the land, the political and social terms, of the City of Light
